LETTER
FROM THE PUBLISHER

Dear Readers,
I have heard so many times
this past month sad personal stories of people losing their
businesses. Not just Real Estate companies, but related companies
as well—furniture, design, art studios and more. Yes,
this is a hard thing to go through, just as losing your home
to foreclosure is—you feel failure. But if there is
something good that can come from this kind of loss, there
is always an opportunity to change your path; every minute
of every day you can make a decision to change your path.
I ran into a friend that
I had not seen for a few weeks and I asked her how business
was and she lit up. She said her business was up 20 percent!
“Wow,” I said, “that is great. What is the
change? What did you do to promote this increase?” She
replied, “A friend told me to let go of the oars.”
I’ll tell you, I was almost moved to tears in front
of a crowd. The friend she spoke of was me, but the words
were not mine. I was honored to be the communicator, but the
message is credited to Abraham-Hicks. I knew the practice
worked because I follow it and so do many of my friends. It
was just so fabulous to see the change in this person when
she stopped trying so damn hard. The stress of the world was
lifted.
I urge all of you to get
the book, “The Astonishing Power of Emotions”
by Esther and Jerry Hicks. The book is good, but what is worth
the $29.95 is the audio CD that is in the back. Pop it in
your CD player anywhere and everywhere and understand that
nothing we want in life is upstream. Stop paddling upstream
so hard that you lose sight of what you want your life. Let
go of the oars and naturally flow to all you want.
It is really difficult
during these trying economic times to struggle and work harder
for less money. However, if we put our minds and spirits in
the right place, it just won’t be so hard. Feel the
flow of the life you were meant to live.
And now, on to the articles
for July.
In the July National article
by Michelle Savage, we take a look at errors and omissions
insurance and how it can protect the Real Estate agent from
liability. With all the finger-pointing that has been the
result of the recent state of the Real Estate industry, it’s
important to know that you’re covered if you are accused
anything from a simple oversight to outright negligence. In
“The ABCs of E&O Insurance,” you can find
out more about this coverage and why it can be crucial to
the bottom line of your business.
Our Feature article for
July is on a local candidate for justice of the peace for
North Las Vegas, Department 3. Jonathan MacArthur has made
a name for himself as a criminal trial lawyer, and his refreshing
candor and his divergence from “politics as usual”
have made him a unique candidate for this office. Read more
about him in Doug Shields’ article, “What Happens
When Actual Humans Run for Office?”
In Cathie C. Hulen’s
article, “Education and Involvement Create a Healthy
Career,” she introduces us to Linda Murphy, a local
REALTOR® with Windermere at Anthem Hills. Linda is also
active with GLVAR, and she is part of a team of international
REALTORS® within the Windermere office. You can read more
about Linda and her commitment to education in this July profile.
Jimmy Schmidt is a local
landscape artist whose work is featured in our July service
provider profile. In “First Impressions, Lasting Enjoyment,”
Cathie C. Hulen talks about what goes into the process when
Jimmy takes on a new project, and the enjoyment he gets out
of making his clients’ visions a reality.
In our Beyond Green column
for July, Doug Shields interviews actor and environmentalist
Ed Begley Jr. Ed has long been recognized as a prominent figure
in the world of sustainability, and even has his own line
of “green” cleaning products. In “How to
Change the Debate on Global Warming,” Ed shows us that
our actions speak louder than our words when it comes to creating
real progress toward sustainability.
Our Urban Update article
for July, “New Help, New Hope,” provides an update
on the Lou Ruvo Brain Institute. Located in the new Union
Park area of downtown Las Vegas, the LRBI has created a wave
of optimism when it comes to the treatment and cure of Alzheimer’s
and other brain disorders. Cathie C. Hulen checks in with
Dr. Zaven Khachaturian and Maureen Peckman, COO of Keep Memory
Alive, to find out more about the progress this amazing project
is making.
In our July Lifestyle article,
Rita Templeton, a self-proclaimed perfectionist, sits down
with local life stylist Christine Norrbom and finds out that
the rules of organization aren’t so organized. In “Clearing
the Clutter,” Rita explains why it’s so important
to get organized—not just for the efficiency of your
business, but for your peace of mind as well. And Christine
offers valuable advice on how to go about getting from chaos
to controlled—in a way that works specifically for you—one
small step at a time.
The National Association
of REALTORS®, in its annual conference in Washington,
D.C., outlined a new rule regarding MLS and short sale disclosure.
While sellers may not always want to disclose that a listing
is a short sale for a variety of reasons, NAR felt it was
important enough information that the MLS should provide a
uniform way for listing agents to do so, if the client agrees
to it. In John Benedict’s Legal Notes article, “New
MLS Rule Impacts Short Sale Disclosures,” read about
how this will affect how agents list these kinds of properties
on the MLS.
One of the unique aspects
of high-rise living is the terrace. Some of the more luxurious
units in Las Vegas boast terraces encompassing thousands of
square feet, providing an awesome opportunity for creating
an oasis in the sky. In Brenda Calvin’s Vertical Update
column, she visits Linda Evans and Shawn Love on their terrace
at the top of the Metropolis, as well as the 17th floor terrace
of a home at One Queensridge Place. Read more in Brenda’s
July article, “Terrace Envy; Outdoor Space at Height.”
The World Market Center
is an awesome sight to behold, and it is still growing and
stretching its way down the I-15 freeway. In Design Connection,
Stephen Leon announces the completion of Building C and tells
us how this new addition will rearrange and contribute to
the way the Market is currently operating. Read more about
it in Stephen’s article “The Las Vegas Summer
Market—Opening of Building C.”
If you are thinking of
taking on building a Web site yourself this summer, Rebecca
Ragland has good news in the Technology column. WordPress
has adopted a new listings plug-in that has gotten great reviews.
Check it out in Technology News.
