It’s a Wonderful

Penthouse in Las Vegas |

Once
again the holidays are upon us. The cooler weather has us
thinking about down comforters, fireplaces with stockings
hung, warm cocoa and the smell of a noble fir. What a wonderful
time of year to share the warmth of one’s home with
family and friends. There’s no question if we’ve
been naughty or nice this year, as we’ve received a
special invitation into the warmth of all things fine—a
high-rise penthouse.
A penthouse is unique. It
is a one-of-a-kind abode for entertaining and for everyday
living. A penthouse, located at the very pinnacle of a high-rise
structure, usually requires the most luxurious—and perhaps,
exotic—materials from faraway lands. It is located on
the top floor of a building (the definition of a true penthouse),
many times with limited elevator access to only those who
are honored guests. Sometimes a penthouse has a terrace or
rooftop garden for the private use of the owner. As in the
castles of old, these magical views take you to new heights
where the air is fresh and the mind is cleansed.
The Shulman Penthouse
Metropolis
I am thrilled to introduce
you to the three-story penthouse of Barry and Allyn Shulman.
Their home, including the rooftop terrace, is a 7,500-square-foot,
three-story masterpiece on levels 19, 20 and 21 of the Metropolis
building. The grand double-door entry takes us into a world
of art, beauty and living well. The great room boasts palatial
20-foot ceilings adorned with ionic columns and 24-carat gold-leaf
accents, reminiscent of the grand ballrooms of Paris or Vienna.
The soaring two-story windows are adorned with yards and yards
of golden silk fabric and dramatic remote-control solar shades.
Four crystal chandeliers hang from the soaring ceilings, and
the flooring is a fabulously unique design of hardwoods with
inlaid marble. “Allyn wanted to have the elegance of
Versailles with the opportunity for significant entertaining,
yet comfortable enough for it to be very livable for us,”
says Barry.
When asked where the stunning
furniture and decorative items were purchased, Allyn says,
“We had so much fun shopping in unique stores in New
York and other cities. It was a true treasure hunt.”
A winding marble staircase
takes us to the second level, where an ornate baby grand piano
rests patiently, overlooking the living area 20 feet below.
The huge master suite is clad in off-white and yellow silk.
Both Barry and Allyn have adjacent work spaces, with large
built-in flat screens to serve as their computer monitors.
(Barry is the publisher of Card Player Magazine and Allyn
is an accomplished attorney.) An extra sitting room was converted
to create Allyn’s expansive closet—with a place
for everything. Both of their marble baths are exquisitely
appointed, with no detail left behind.
Taking the winding marble
staircase one additional level, we arrive on level 21 (the
third level of the home and roof level of the building). Here
Barry and Allyn have a setting to rival any private Hollywood
theatre viewing room. There are cushy, hunter green leather
lounge chairs, plenty of plush pillows and a 120-inch screen.
“This was my area of interest,” says Barry. “I’ve
always dreamed of having a home theater.” And a home
theater it is! I can’t imagine a better place to sink
into one of those big leather chairs and watch an epic film.
Just pass the popcorn! Behind the screen, I was shown the
“brain” of the operation, where panel after panel
of electronics filled the room. The extensive technology throughout
the home is controlled on wall-mounted flat panels in each
room. “By any of the remotes we can control the hot
tub, lighting, draperies, climate, TVs, DVDs, and CDs, and
all TVs in the home also serve as PC monitors for viewing
the Internet,” says Barry.
There is an expansive rooftop
terrace on either side of the theater. On the west side terrace,
Barry and Allyn have a grand outdoor entertaining area where
guests often enjoy the colorful desert sunset and al-fresco
dining. It is an awe-inspiring panoramic view of the entire
Las Vegas Strip, the Wynn golf course, mountains and city
lights. On the east side terrace, there is a lounging/sunning
area, complete with private hot tub. The whole experience
is truly breathtaking. “We are still in the process
of fine-tuning and adding a few things. Then we hope to offer
our home for a few special charity events,” says Allyn.
Married just three years
ago, Barry and Allyn are still very much newlyweds. “We
got married when the building was still under construction,
so this is our first home together. We are fortunate to have
designed it exactly to our liking,” says Barry. From
their perch atop the world, it is clear that Barry and Allyn
oversee the heartbeat of the Las Vegas valley. A special thank
you goes out to Barry and Allyn for allowing us to enter their
sacred space, their inner sanctum, if only for a moment.
Happy Holidays to
everyone, and until next time, here’s wishing you “elevated”
sales!
